Ashley's 23rd Birthday!

Yesterday was Ashley's 23rd Birthday, and her sweet husband, Ian, set up a surprise dinner for her!

A little about Ashley (read more HERE and HERE and HERE):
Ash and I have been friends for 17 years.  Wow.  That's a long time when you type it out.  She moved to Arkansas from Kentucky in the 1st grade and we were placed in the same first grade class!  We instantly become best friends... however you do that when you're 6.  Sadly, I moved away in the second grade, but we continued to be friends.  We would write letters and send each other birthday gifts.  I remember for one birthday she sent me a "Hallelujah Hop" c.d.  I thought it was so cool!  Every time we would go back to Arkansas to visit family, Ash and I would always get to play together and we would pick up right where we left off!

In the 5th grade, my family moved back to Arkansas, and our moms arranged for us to be on the same team in middle school.  All throughout middle school, junior high, and high school we were as close as can be.  After our senior year of high school, Ash decided to go to ASU whereas I decided to go to Belmont in Nashville, TN.  Luckily, we both decided our hearts were at the U of A and moved there the following year.

Of course we've had our share of fights and disputes, but through it all we've remained great friends, and I'm so lucky to have Ash in my life.  She's quite possibly the funniest person you will ever meet.  Just ask her to tell you a joke, and 20 minutes later when she's finally spit out the joke you'll be crying from laughing so hard.  We have a dance named after Ash called the "finger dance" and well... that's another post in itself.  Let's just say Ash wasn't gifted in the rhythm department, but she was a heck of a cheerleader!
She's the type of person that will tell it like it is, whether you want to hear it or not.  She's incredibly sweet too, and has a total heart for children.  She wants to be an elementary teacher.  Oh, and her hubby's not too bad either!

Soooo.... Happy Birthday Ash!!!

Sorority

So I was a Tri Delt in college.  Delta Delta Delta.... for a little while at least.  Anyway, every sorority in college has a mascot.  Ours was a dolphin.  In fact, we had a dolphin tank in the basement ;)

You're probably wondering where I'm going with this.

Well, my best friend Ashley was a Chi Omega and my other best friend Christi was a Kappa Kappa Gamma.  Yep, we made up the 3 houses at the top of the hill, all right next to each other yet all completely different.  That's kind of how our friendship goes though...

So Chi Omega's mascot was the owl.  EVERYONE knows that Chi O's are owls.  They take total pride in being owls.  Everything they own has an owl on it.

Well, Kappa's mascot is also an owl.  And a flour de lies.  AND a golden key.

You'd think they could just pick one. (I mean if I was a Kappa, I'd choose the flour de leis)

Well, so I've always wondered if it bothered the Chi O's that Kappas were owls too.  I mean, we all know that the OWL is Chi Omega territory.  Just walk into Ashley's house/go shopping with her.  She's very partial to owls.

So answer my question for me, would you be offended if another sorority was using your mascot?

(I know that for most who read my blog, this post is incredibly petty/childish.  BUT it really is something I've always wondered about).

Art

I'm pretty sure that just about any tv show can make me cry. American Idol. Yep. Extreme Home Makeover. Check. Oprah. That one too. Today, Oprah was doing a show on the new television series Undercover Boss. It's where the CEO's of major companies, go undercover and work the jobs of their employees. She had a CEO of a Waste Management System on there and I just started crying when I saw the people who do some of the worst jobs, clean port-a-potties, pick up trash, work at land fills--yet they have the most positive attitudes and they love their jobs. It makes me really embarrassed about how blessed I am, yet I still seem to complain from time to time. I should instead be thankful for the opportunities that I have.

I had the pleasure of having a much needed phone conversation with one of my best friends today. She just had the most precious little girl, Greenlee, a little over a month ago. One thing a lot of people don't know about Summer, is that she is SOOO incredibly talented with art. She paints gorgeous canvases, and can do just about anything else creative really well. I'm encouraging her to start selling her projects, because she could make some extra money on the side and have enough funds to keep doing what she loves.
